What is aromatherapy ?

Aromatherapy ... It's a story! It is the medical use of aromatic extracts from plants or more commonly known as essential oils. The use can be therapeutic or to create a scent of atmosphere. Derived from phytotherapy, aromatherapy is similar to naturopathy while being classified as non-conventional medicine. It is a natural therapy of great efficiency that complements all other alternative approaches very well provided you use "genuine" essential oils and use them properly. This therapy has been used for millennia in Egypt, ancient Greece or China. When you mix different essential oils, you create a synergy that can then be broken down by theme. Each plant can act on the human organism, all the chemical properties of each plant can be determined and analyzed. The aromatogram allows obtaining scientific indications on their properties and their essential oils.

Various and varied use of essential oils

The easiest and most common use is atmospheric diffusion, but only with a suitable diffuser that allows a micro diffusion or whose diffusion temperature is between 35 and 60 ° C maximum. A higher temperature accelerates the oxidation and alters the properties of the essential oils. Therefore, avoid the incense burner whose temperature can be higher than 100 ° c. Another precaution to take, do not leave the air diffuser active continuously, indeed ten minutes or so per hour are sufficient. In some cases and for people with respiratory allergies (asthma), diffusion may be contraindicated. The diffuser of essential oils is very often used to "create an olfactory decor" or to obtain a pleasant ambient scent or to chase the unwanted odors of cooking certain foods. The fruity aromas of citrus fruits, for example, are perfectly recommended. In offices, workrooms, libraries, conference and study rooms, "toning" synergies will help stimulate intellectual work, concentration or memory. In shops and stores, body odor, cigarette or cleaning products are crippling. The diffusion of essential oils can favor the commercial transactions because the customer will be more disposed to make his purchases in a healthy climate. The massage parlors, tanning salons or relaxation rooms use synergies that are conducive to relaxation. The diffuser of essential oils can be effective in the destruction of microorganisms or germs carrying diseases such as influenza. It can also be used in prevention for the disinfection of the home or workplace.

What is aromatherapy

Automedication of comfort, calm, relaxation, preparation for falling asleep, etc ... so many benefits found with the use, wisely, essential oils. Certain essential oils, such as exotic basil, Scots pine or black spruce can help to cope with stressful situations. Many of these oils also have antiseptic properties, which can, among other things, be used to fight colds and bronchial infections, inhaled or applied to the chest. Pains of all types can also be relieved with essential oils. Rheumatism, joint pain, cramps, muscular fatigue, painful rash, tooth rage but also headaches and especially migraine, for which the essential oil of peppermint is particularly recommended. Skin diseases can also be reduced by some essential oils. But be careful, we must be particularly careful because many of them are, on the contrary, dermocaustic, they irritate the skin and may cause burns. It is not essential to be sick or stressed to use essential oils. Their use in prevention can, for example, strengthen the immune system.

The different diffusers of essential oils

There are several way spread technologies:
Natural diffusion: just put a few drops on a silica stone and let the diffusion be done naturally. The silica stone can be a hot surface for better diffusion.

Gentle heat: the natural diffusion process is accelerated by heat ... but gentle so as not to alter the properties of essential oils. More intense heat would burn the essential oils and make them lose all their properties. The ceramic construction allows to place the diffuser on any surface because only the high part heats up. This type of diffuser makes no noise and is very easy to maintain, just clean with a soft cloth and wet the upper part. This delivery mode does not create saturation of the part.

The nebulization or venturi effect: an air pump and a glassware that will serve as a nozzle, will allow the creation of a mist. The glassware will burst the essential oil into many fine particles and spread it like a fog.

Ultrasound: we pour a few drops of essential oils into the water, then a plate vibrates to burst in very fine droplets the water and the essential oil. A fan will then transport this visible and cold haze into the room.

Cold ventilation: A few drops of essential oil are poured into a polypropylene container and a fan propels the air and diffuses the essential oil into the room.

Choose your essential oil

The essential oil is a plant concentrate and if the plant has received any chemical treatment, it will end up in the essential oil! It is important to choose an organic essential oil to make sure that it contains only the plant and nothing else. If the essential oil is not organic, that does not mean that it is bad, you just have to make sure of the origin and the way in which it was distilled.
Be sure to choose a labeled oil. This allows you to know exactly what's inside. Indeed, the oils do not have the same effects according to their chemotype. It is therefore essential that it be determined and indicated on the bottle.
Two labels exist in France, which you can trust completely:
- HECT, for chemotyped essential oil
- HEBBD, for botanically and biochemically determined essential oil
To preserve all its properties, the essential oil must be in an airtight bottle and protected from light. Check the packaging before buying and where they are stored. Well preserved, they do not perish.
Some tips :
It is important to distribute only pure essential oils and preferably organic cultivation. Never distribute the essential oils continuously it would lead to saturate the air aromatic molecules. Avoid leaving essential oils too long in a diffuser because they can oxidize and thicken. Never broadcast more than 5 minutes in a child's room

Despite the therapeutic properties given to essential oils by their biochemical components, these same components can be the source of contra indications. Aromatherapy still excludes treatments based on essential oils for infants because of enzymatic immaturity, for pregnant women (especially during the first three months when tissues are in training), for people with allergies (asthmatics , ...), for animals such as dogs and cats (absence of certain enzymatic metabolization systems) and always without the advice of a knowledgeable professional. Some essential oils are very well tolerated on the skin, but they are the exception. Some essential oils are dermocaustic, that is, they irritate or damage the skin. Most essential oils need to be diluted to 1/5 (maximum concentration) most often to 1/10 or even 1/20 or 1/100 (minimum concentration) that is to say 20%, 10%, 5% or 1% V / V or W / W in a vegetable oil (sweet almond, avocado, argan, macadamia etc.) Some essential oils mutually potentiate each other and are therefore more effective in combination. Formulas associating different essential oils in certain indications, such as those included in the specialized literature, therefore have a meaning.
