Controlled mechanical ventilation (CMV) is a mechanism designed to ensure the renewal of indoor air, especially for so-called wet rooms: bathrooms, toilets, kitchens, ...



i - The single flow CMV

This technique guarantees a constant air flow in a silent and permanent way.

The extraction flow rate and the distributed fresh air flow are ensured automatically, whatever the external weather conditions or the number of occupants of the dwelling.

The outgoing air flow may vary according to the indoor humidity, room by room for the hygro-adjustable CMV and for the whole house for the version hygra variable.

ii - The double flow CMV

A dual flux CMV is actually a circuit:

This is a single flow system, doubled to recover the heat of the expelled air.

To keep the heat in the room, the expelled air goes into a heat exchanger where it crosses the new cold air coming from outside.

The heat exchange creates allows to recover up to 90% of the heat of the air which will be redistributed in the living rooms.

iiBis - The Canadian well

Like the double flow CMV, the Canadian well is a salvation improvement of energy efficiency.

This technique uses geothermal energy by capturing the natural temperature of the ground to preheat ventilation air in winter or to refresh in the summer.

What does the current regulation say?



The basic regulations are based on the Construction and Housing Code of 1958 which defines the technical parts and main parts as well as the need for a ventilation system per room. It also prescribes the installation of high and low ventilation grills.

The ventilation of the habitat is regulated since 1969. The decree of March 24, 1982, modified by the decree of October 28, 1983 have introduced changes that specify the principle of general and permanent ventilation and the flows to extract.

Thus, the air exchange of residential buildings is based on the principle of general ventilation ( all parts of the housing are treated) and permanent (the ventilation can not be interrupted).

The air circulation must be able to be done by the entry of air in the main rooms (stay , bedrooms) and its extraction in the service rooms (kitchen, bathrooms, toilets).

In the interest of saving energy, the notions of modulation of the flow have been introduced so successive:

Appearance of double extraction rate in cooking e (decree of March 24, 1982);

Variation of the flow extracted according to the humidity of the air of the house (decree of October 28, 1983).

Hygiene of the air

The pollution, due to human activity, or the contamination, coming from outside, settles progressively at home and in each dwelling if the air is not renewed. Bad odors, from the kitchen for example, steam in the bathroom or moisture persist in rooms that are not properly ventilated. This can also eventually lead to mold and deterioration of your furniture faster.

Ventilation, extracting polluted air and replacing it with fresh air, will therefore enhance both comfort and hygiene conditions at home. Your health and well-being depend on it

The CMV offers constant air circulation in all seasons. Ventilation is mechanically created by an extraction unit equipped with a fan. There are several versions:

• VMC standard single flow
• VMC single flow hygro-variable
• VMC single flow hygro-adjustable
• VMC with double flow

How it works ?

Fresh and new air between the main parts called "dry" (living room, bedroom) and polluted air is evacuated by wet rooms called "technical" (kitchen, bathroom, toilet).

The fresh air intake in the main rooms is usually done at the doors and windows with self-adjusting outlets. The air then flows to the technical rooms using the air passages under the interior doors which must be imperatively 1 to 1.5 cm.

The polluted air is expelled by Outlets located on walls or ceilings and connected by ducts to a motorized extractor often installed in the attic of the dwelling. A hat on the roof rejects contaminated air to the outside.

The single flow VMC guarantees constant airflow. The air circulation is silent and permanent. The flow rate of the air extraction and the flow rate of the distributed fresh air are ensured automatically, whatever the external climatic conditions or the number of occupants of the dwelling.

The flow outgoing air can also vary depending on the indoor humidity level, room by room for the hygro-adjustable version, and for the entire home for the hygro-variable version.
We can thus control excess moisture and heat loss. The air extraction vents in the humid rooms are equipped with humidity sensors, which regulate the flow of air entering and leaving depending on the humidity level of the room.

What is CMV double flow?



A CMV double flow is ventilation allowing to breathe fresh air in the dry rooms (living room, rooms, ...) and to extract it in the wet rooms (kitchen, bathroom, ...) of the house, forming thus a circuit.
Unlike single flow CMVs, double-flow does not put the dwelling in a vacuum that limits the entrance of external dust and facilitates fires in homes without a fresh air intake as in the case of stoves.

This is the simple flow system, doubled to recover heat from the expelled air.
CMV uses polluted air coming out to preheat incoming air.
Hot air expelled from wet rooms passes through a heat exchanger before being thrown out.
The new cold air coming from outside passes through this exchanger where it recovers up to 90% of the heat of the expelled air before being redistributed in the living rooms.

A dual flow VMC has the advantage of being able to mate with a heat exchanger (or recuperator on polluted air) allowing the winter to preheat the incoming air with the help of the outgoing air and, for an air-conditioned house, summer to refresh this air.

Unlike a single flow VMC system, the dual flow does not require the installation of air inlets above the windows. The double flow will take the fresh air outside, purify it with its high efficiency filters, then breathe it into the living rooms of your home through diffusers.
It will also, like a traditional VMC, extract stale air from "polluted" rooms such as the kitchen, the bathroom or the toilet.
In the center of the VMC dual flow is a heat exchanger where these two air flows will intersect. The double flow will thus recover the energy of the calories present in the polluted air then diffuse them in the filtered fresh air and thus in your home.
So, in winter, when you heat your home, the air blown will not have the outside air temperature new but will be tempered by the heat of the air extracted. This system saves up to 20% on the heating bill.

This is the principle of aerothermics.

In winter, this system saves even more energy by avoiding opening windows while heating is running. This considerably limits heat loss.
In summer, this system makes free refreshment by bringing fresh night air directly into the rooms. As for hygro-adjustable ventilation, it regulates the humidity level of the home by adapting to the rhythm of life.
